On sloping sites he steps the wall with the ground so the footing stays at the right depth the whole way along.
Drainage Done Right
Drainage is what separates a retaining wall that lasts from one that fails. Behind every wall Jamie builds there is an ag drain at the base, drainage gravel backfilled against the wall, and a waterproof membrane on the earth side so moisture doesn't wick through the block. Weep holes are placed where they're needed. Water gets out, pressure never builds up, and the wall stays put through a wet Melbourne winter.
